Ils ont livré trois batailles qui restent immortellement gravées dans la mémoire de tous les Haïtiens dignes de ce nom. En vrai, on ne devrait pas oublier les batailles de la crête-à-pierrot, de la ravine à couleuvre et la bataille de verrières. Cette dernière a consacré la victoire de nos ancêtres appelés indigènes sur les troupes de Rochambeau. En vue de célébrer cette glorieuse victoire, Catherine Flon a cousu le premier drapeau haïtien à Arcahaie.
C’était un coup très dur pour Napoléon Bonaparte, car la bataille de Vertières marque la première défaite de Nappoléon, bien avant celle de Waterloo. Une défaite provenant d’une colonie. Ce fut une gifle donnée à la France et à tout le système colonialiste. Pour les procureurs du système colonialiste, Haïti était devenu un mauvais précédent.

Car, la haine joue au profit de l’ennemi. L’objectif était d’anéantir Haïti afin de prouver qu’elle était un mauvais exemple pour les autres colonies.
Cette bataille, cette épopée ; elle a été le fruit de l’union. Les noirs et les mulâtres ont mis de côté tous les clivages épidermiques ou socio-économiques. Ils se sont unis pour éliminer le système infernal qui dominait la colonie. Ce geste a prouvé qu’on peut faire beaucoup de choses en s’unissant. D’où le sens de notre devise nationale « l’union fait la force ».
