Dans une interview accordée à la chaine de télévision locale, CBSN Boston, l’homme a déclaré qu’il était à environ treize mètres de profondeur lors que « soudainement, j’ai senti cet énorme coup et tout est devenu noir ». Dans un premier moment, le pêcheur dit qu’il croyait être mordu par un requin. Mais grâce à son régulateur de plongée, Michael Packard dit n’avoir point ressenti de douleur ni aucune dent. C’est « alors j’ai réalisé, oh mon Dieu, je suis dans la bouche d’une baleine, et elle essaie de m’avaler' », a-t-il argué.

Et j’ai pensé à mes enfants, ma femme, il y a vraiment aucun moyen de se sortir de là. Et subitement, elle a fait irruption à la surface, s’est mise à secouer la tête. J’ai été projeté en l’air et j’ai atterri dans l’eau. Et j’étais libre, je flottais simplement… Je n’arrivais pas à croire que je m’en étais sorti. Et je suis là pour le raconter », a conclu Michael Packard.
