États-Unis: Une religieuse accusée d’avoir détourné de l’argent pour jouer au casino.

Mary Margaret Kreuper, une religieuse de 79 ans est accusée d’avoir détourné l’argent d’une école dont elle a été la directrice pendant 28 ans pour jouer au casino. Cette nonne américaine qui sera jugée le 1er juillet prochain, risque au maximum 40 ans de prison et une amende de 1,67 millions de dollars américains, a rapporté le Los Angeles Times cité par Le Point.fr.

Soeur Mary Margaret aurait détourné plus de 835 000 dollars américains durant son passage à la tête de l’école Saint-James de Torrence, dans l’État de Californie, aux États-Unis. En dépit du voeu de pauvreté fait par cette religieuse, cela ne l’avait pas empêché d’utiliser l’argent de l’école pour jouer au casino, d’acquitter ses dettes et d’autres dépenses. Retraitée depuis 2018, la religieuse a été inculpée au cours de cette semaine pour « fraude électronique et blanchiment d’argent ». C’est le bureau du procureur du district central de Californie qui a annoncé la nouvelle.

Selon ce que rapporte Le Point.fr, la nonne aurait plaidé coupable pour les deux chefs d’accusation retenus contre elle. « Une autre religieuse a avoué avoir également détourné de l’argent dans cette affaire, mais elle ne serait pas pour l’instant poursuivie par la justice », a ajouté le quotidien Le Point.fr.

C’est un pasteur qui avait confié en 2018 aux parents des élèves que la directrice de ladite école ainsi qu’une autre religieuse utilisaient les fonds de l’institution pour jouer au casino notamment à Las Vegas. Suite à ce scandale, la communauté religieuse de Saint-James, à  travers  un communiqué, se dit choquée et attristée . Alors que les avocats de l’accusée ont avoué que leur cliente éprouve beaucoup de remords après ces révélations contre elle. La religieuse a parfaitement collaboré avec la justice, ont renchéri ses avocats.

Plus loin, les avocats de Mary Margaret Kreuper avaient déclaré que celle-ci souffrait d’une maladie mentale. C’est ce qui la pousse à poser cet acte malhonnête. « Elle est devenue religieuse à l’âge de 18 ans, et pendant les 59 années suivantes, elle a consacré sa vie à aider les autres et à éduquer les enfants dans les écoles archidiocésaines. Malheureusement, plus tard dans sa vie, elle a souffert d’une maladie mentale qui a assombri son jugement et l’a amenée à faire quelque chose qu’elle n’aurait pas fait autrement », ont-ils fait savoir. Toutefois, ils n’ont pas fourni trop de détails sur la maladie de leur cliente. L’accusée devra se présenter devant un tribunal le 1er juillet à venir en vue de son audition sur les faits qui lui sont reprochés.
